Serra do Divisor National Park: a protected area under threat in the south-western Brazilian Amazon

Summary Protected areas have numerous roles (such as biodiversity preservation, the development of scientific research and sustainable use natural resources), but they are under threat from political economic forces. The 837 000-ha Serra do Divisor National Park (SDNP) in south-western Brazilian Amazon combines conservation resources maintenance productive activities c . 400 resident families. Peruvian governments proposed a road linking Acre (Brazil) to Ucayali (Peru) that would bisect SDNP. Another SDNP is bill proposing its downgrading an ‘environmental protection area’. This study aims map land cover surroundings 1988 2018 analyse dynamics land-use change. Analysis Landsat satellite images with supervised classification using MaxVer algorithm show that, during 30-year period, pasture showed highest absolute land-cover gain, 1986 ha interior 7661 along periphery Only 1% park’s primary forest was lost by 2018, potential may result accelerated deforestation degradation near future.
